Kobayashi to Eat Hot Dogs
Have no fear, competitive eating fans- Kobayashi will defend his title at the Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest at Coney Island tomorrow. Despite a case of “jaw-thritis” that jeopardized his chances at competing, Takeru Kobayashi weighed in at a fit and ready 154 pounds, all set to defend his title for the sixth time. This year will be his biggest challenge to date as American Joey Chestnutt, the new world record holder is the favorite. Chestnutt set the new world record for hot dog eating last month with an impressive 59 1/2 dogs, shattering Kobayashi’s 53 1/2. Call me unpatriotic, but I’m rooting for the cagy veteran to hold off the young American on the Fourth of July. You don’t just waltz into comptetive eating and take out the champ when he is injured. Kobayashi winning tomorrow would be like Kirk Gibson and Willis Reed rolled into one 154 pound Asian eating hot dogs. A great underdog’s tale and fantastic sports hero moment in the making. I know I’ll be watching.
