The Joe Calzaghe – Mikkel Kessler fight will be on regular HBO in the United States, not Pay-Per-View, according to ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael.
The Jermain Taylor – Kelly Pavlik fight tentatively set for September 29, may be in danger because Taylor can’t make the 160 pound limit anymore. Taylor has said that he is willing to fight Pavlik with the same terms already agreed to, but at a higher weight. Pavlik wants to fight for the middleweight title. I suspect that Taylor will agree to one last fight at 160, with the option of moving up and giving up the belt if he wins, and moving up with a built in excuse if he loses.
The Fernando Vargas – Ricardo Mayorga press conference went pretty much exactly how everyone should have assumed it would go. Mayorga insults opponents family…opponent gets mad…Mayorga slaps at opponent…melee ensues. Sort of sounds familiar doesn’t it. Here’s the video if you haven’t seen it.
After watching Joel Julio batter around Cornelius “K-9″ Bundrage last night on Wednesday Night Fights, can we please stop putting these overhyped Contender fighters in the ring with people as if they’re legitimated opponents. The best win that any one of them has had since leaving the show was Steve Forbes’ loss to Demetrius Hopkins. What does that say? Peter Manfredo is at least willing to get in the ring with good opponents, and has a decent win over Scott Pemberton, but these guys just aren’t the “contenders” we’re supposed to buy into them being. I’m getting sick of hearing an opponent being justified as “…of Contender fame”. Don’t try to tell me that Sergio Mora’s next fight matters, because it doesn’t.
And speaking of WNF, did you see Mike Tyson at the fights last night? If ever there’s been a more medicated person on television, I’d be surprised. But it’s strange how even the most medicated, calm Tyson looks like he’s going to snap at any minute. As long as he’s alive, you’ll always have that “what’s he going to do next” attitude towards him. Am I the only one who feared for Lisa Salters during that interview?
