Steroids Found In Benoit’s Body

lukekohler.com: Latest post

I’m only posting about this to do my part to fight the misconceptions. This is the headline on ESPN.com, The Drudge Report, and many more sights. Most people probably will not click on the link to read what the article says. It does say that Chris Benoit had steroids in his system. He had 10 times the normal level of testosterone. He also had Xanax and hydrocodone in his system. He had no alcohol in his system.

But the reason I am writing about it, is because there is a very important quote in there that may go unnoticed. This is taken directly from the Associated Press article:

“The state’s top medical examiner, Dr. Kris Sperry, said there was no evidence of any other anabolic steroids in the wrestler’s body and nothing to show that steroids played a role in the deaths of Nancy and Daniel Benoit.

“An elevation of that ratio does not translate into something abnormal in a person’s thought process or behavior,” he said.”

I am only pointing this out because you are likely to hear over and over that steroids contributed to his death. I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll do so again: there is no evidence to support the notion that “roid rage” exists. Yes some experts believe that it could happen, but after all of the studies, they are yet to find evidence that it does happen.

I’m no psychologist, but I find it way more likely that the type of person who pursues professional wrestling as a profession, is more drawn to violence and is overall more aggressive. I’m not saying all wrestlers are violent, I’m just saying that if you go down that road in your life, there’s a reason. My amateur opinion is that the same thing that makes these guys perform so well in the ring, makes them so unstable out of the ring. And the same thing that draws them there, makes them probably more likely to take some form of steroid. I think it’s faulty logic to assume that the steroids are the culprit here. How about all of the Hollywood stars that may be juiced. And hell, even the accused baseball players. None of them have show violent outbursts. They may be called assholes, but they aren’t killing people. I have the same theory towards football players, but that’s another story for another day.

Now let me clarify, I’m not indicting all football players and wrestlers, just floating a theory out there that I have no evidence to support. Steroids don’t make people more violent, violent people are more likely to pursue careers that involve using steroids. If anyone is a psychologist and has an opinion on my opinion, I’d love to hear it. If I’m flat out wrong, I’ve got no problem admitting it, I’m just hoping to open a new dialogue.
