Taylor-Pavlik Signed, Wonjongkam Upset

lukekohler.com: Latest post

Two big pieces of news from the boxing world today…

- The Jermain Taylor – Kelly Pavlik fight is done and signed. The two will meet for the middleweight championship of the world. The fight will take place September 29, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Within 35 days, Taylor and Pavlik will fight for the middleweight title, then Mikkel Kessler and Joe Calzaghe will fight for the super-middleweight title. The four of them are a combined 140-0-1. These are, in my opinion, the two most important fights that could be made in boxing. Now if only we can get Mayweather vs. Mosely, or even Mayweather vs. Hatton. Then I’d be happy. Oh yeah, and Pacquiao vs. Valero.

- Big upset out of Japan today, as Pongsaklek Wonjongkam lost a unanimous decision to Daisuke Naito in Tokyo. Wonjongkam hadn’t lost in 11 years, a run of 56 fights, including two previous wins over Naito! Scores were 115-113, 116-113, 116-113, all for the underdog. Wonjongkam falls to 65-3, with 34 KOs, while the new WBC champ improves to 31-2-2, with 20 KOs.
