Ron Mexico, a.k.a. Michael Vick will decide by the end of the week if he is going to accept a plea agreement that would include less than a year of jail time. Vick’s lawyers recommended to him to take the deal, but Vick hasn’t decided.
Part of the reason he may not have made a decision is that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will not negotiate Vick’s NFL status until the legal process and NFL investigation are complete. That means Vick wants to know if taking a plea means a year in jail, then he can play football, or if taking the plea may include a suspension after that from the NFL. Whether or not anyone will employ him after his release from prison is another question altogether.
The reason that Vick is looking at taking a plea is because all of his boys turned on him quite quickly. The final two co-defendents in Vick’s case scheduled plea hearings this week, meaning Vick is now pretty much on his own. Now, with no other options, he’s looking for a way out.
Vick had originally faced up to six years in prison for the dogfighting charges, and is now potentially looking at a just a year. While that may be good news for Vick and possibly whoever employs him upon his release, but for what he allegedly did, I personally am not satisfied.
Michael Vick was one of my favorite football players of all time. His sheer athleticism and unpredictability made him the most exciting player of his generation. He completely rejuvenated Atlanta Falcons football. Now that’s going to be left to the great Joey Harrington to finish the job.
For anyone who doesn’t appreciate just what Vick was involved with, I ask you to watch the most recent episode of HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. The second segment of the show is on the “sport” of dogfighting. “Disturbing” doesn’t even begin to describe what this underground sport entails. I dare you to watch that 12 minutes or so and not want Vick to spend the rest of his life in jail.

On a side note to that, I just wanted to say for the record that when it comes to sports on television, nobody in the world is even in the same league as HBO. From Real Sports, to HBO Boxing, to their documentaries, to the Hard Knocks series, to Inside the NFL, they always offer the best sports programming on the planet in terms of quality.
