Since there’s not much in terms of actual boxing this weekend, I’ll keep my predictions short. Here they are: Jason Litzau will win his fight on Friday Night Fights and Arthur Abraham will successfully defend his IBF Middleweight title against Khoren Gevor. Not much to it. Having said that, the Litzau fight should be exciting, as he has good power and the ability to get both rock and get rocked with a single punch. His fights usually equal entertainment. Abraham is one of the top four middleweights in the world. Gevor is not. Sorry I can’t break it down, but when the two of them have fought a combined one out of 52 career fights outside of Germany, I just don’t get to see them often enough. I have seen Abraham and I know he is skilled, the rest I am basing off of what I’ve read. Hopefully, Abraham will come over to America, like he’s said, and defend his title against the big boys. Predictions: Litzau KO 7, Abraham TKO 9.
EDIT: I forgot about the much anticipated matchup of David Tua and Saul Montana fighting in the other boxing Mecca of Utah. Since there’s only so much you can handicap a David Tua fight with, I’ll just say Tua by KO 2. I’m hoping so, at least. If Tua doesn’t show me something in this fight, it’s time to give it up, in my opinion.

In other boxing news…
- Anthony Mundine was released from the hospital, after spending 10 days fighting a nasty eye infection that may cost the WBA “regular” champion his boxing career. Mundine still has blurry vision in his damaged right eye, and doctors believe he will have permanent vision loss, but won’t know for weeks or months. Mundine has vowed to resume his boxing career as soon as possible.
Mundine suffered the eye injury when he cleaned a contact lens with his mouth. Mundine is not a regular lens wearer and was wearing a protective lens after a minor surgery. After putting the lens in his eye, he developed a severe infection and was stuck in the hospital for 10 days as it recovered. He is still on antibiotics and will be monitored over the coming weeks and months.
More on Mundine’s progress as it happens…
- Canadian super-middleweight prospect Lucian Bute is getting his first title shot. Bute will take on IBF titleist Alejandro Berrio on Oct. 11 in Montreal.
UPDATE: The Bute – Berrio fight has been moved to Oct. 19.
- Former heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev will return on Sept. 29 in Germany. The 7-foot Russian lost his belt to Ruslan Chaegav in April. This is his first fight since that defeat. Valuev will take on Jean-Francois Bergeron, an undefeated southpaw from Canada.
- The December 8 mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Ricky Hatton may have to be moved from it’s proposed location of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to the Staples Center in Los Angeles, to accomodate the expected huge crowd and ticket demand. Hatton’s people are asking for 10,000 tickets to be reserved for Brits making the trip across the pond, and the 16,000+ that the Grand Garden Arena holds just may not be enough.
Here’s an idea: Sam Boyd Stadium. It holds over 36,000 people. It’s not like Las Vegas is hot in December. Vegas has an average high of 57 degrees Fahrenheit in December (that’s 14 degrees Celsius to the Brits and Canadians reading this). Add in a bunch of people and hot lights and I think it would be a very comfortable night at the fights. A fight like that would just be icing on the cake to a great year of boxing.
UPDATE: The fight has been officially announced for MGM Grand Garden Arena. Tickets for Mayweather – Hatton will go on sale on Sept. 17 at 10AM PST. So apparently, they didn’t even consider my proposal for Sam Boyd Stadium.
