College Football; Who’s Playing? Who’s Out?

lukekohler.com: Latest post

As we enter the final 48 hours of the college football offseason, and prepare to start the controversies all over again, teams are making their final decisions on starters, and injuries and suspensions are sorting themselves out.

Here’s what’s happening this week in college football:

- Ohio State has named Todd Boeckman starting quarterback for the season opener against Youngstown State.

- Kirby Freeman won the starting QB job in Miami over Kyle Wright.

- Mississippi defensive tackle Jerrell Powe was declared academically ineligible to play. Ole Miss is appealing the decision.

- Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge got hurt again, but says he should be able to play this weekend against Cal. This time it’s a jammed pinkie finger. Also, Tennessee is planning to open the season with a no-huddle offense.

- USC running back Chauncey Washington will not play in the season opener against Idaho. Washington has a sprained shoulder.

- Alabama’s Nick Saban has suspended receiver Keith Brown and linebacker Prince Hall for this week’s Western Carolina matchup, due to violating team policies. They are both one-game suspensions.

- South Carolina will be without their starting quarterback and safety due to suspension. QB Blake Mitchell was suspended for poor summer school attendance, while safety Emanuel Cook was suspended after an arrest on a weapons charge.

- Oregon State’s senior wide receiver Sammie Stroughter will likely not play all season. Stroughter took an 18-day leave of absence to deal with the passing of three loved ones in short time span. Stroughter practiced this week, and definitely won’t play against Utah, but the rest of the season is still up in the air. Coach Mike Riley said it is doubtful he’ll play this season.

- Nick Graziano will start at quarterback for Nevada against Nebraska.

- Oklahoma running back Chris Brown was suspended for the opener against North Texas. No reason was given.

And off the field news…

- Texas Head Coach Mack Brown was given a two-year contract extension that puts his salary at $2.91 million. His current contract now runs through 2016, and puts him among the top five highest paid coaches in the country.

- Former USC running back Emmanuel Moody has decided to transfer to Florida. Moody will sit out this season and be eligible to play in 2008.
