Zuniga Tops Oganov; Torres, Kirkland Win

lukekohler.com: Latest post

In an anticipated matchup, previously perfect Victor Oganov was upset, and knocked out in the ninth round by Fulgencio Zuniga. Oganov scored a first round knockdown, after sending Zuniga reeling into the ropes, but Zuniga took control in the next round. Oganov was outworked and outboxed before being dropped for good in at 1:25 of the ninth. Oganov was 26-0 with 26 knockouts coming into the fight, while Zuniga improves to 20-2-1 with 17 knockouts.

It was for the most part an exciting two-way action fight, but Zuniga got the better of Oganov from the second round on. By the fourth round, Zuniga was just out boxing and peppering Oganov with whatever he wanted, as Oganov only answered with one-punch bomb attempts. It’s hard to say if Zuniga looked that good or if Oganov was over-hyped, but this was a mostly one-sided fight. Oganov showed minimal defense, and never seemed to have an answer for Zuniga’s aggressive attacks and solid boxing.

In other boxing news…

- In another big fight, WBO Junior Welterweight champ Ricardo Torres knocked out Kendall Holt in Columbia. With Holt apparently on his way to a win, Torres got up from a sixth round knockout to stop Holt in the 11th. This was Torres’ second defense of his title.

- On the undercard of the Zuniga – Oganov fight, undefeated prospect James Kirkland knocked out Mohammad Said in the second round. Kirkland is now 20-0 with 17 knockouts.
