Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb told HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel that he thinks black quarterbacks are under more pressure to perform well than white quarterbacks. He says this based on the criticism he receives, even when he plays well. He said that he gets it worse than white QBs like Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer.
I got news for you Donovan, YOU PLAY IN PHILADELPHIA. You’re not playing in Indianapolis or Cincinnati, you are playing in one of the two most ruthless sports cities in the country. No matter who is quarterback in New York or Philly, they are going to get extra criticism. It’s not because you’re black, it’s because you got drafted by a city that booed you from day one because you weren’t Ricky Williams.
If it’s about black quarterbacks, then why does Eli Manning get so much criticism? Is it because he led his team to the playoffs? No, it’s because he didn’t win the Super Bowl. Hell, New York booed Alex Rodriguez off the field last year. Racial? No. Just typical stupid New Yorkers. How about Jets fans cheering Chad Pennington’s injury in week one?
What you’re dealing with here Donovan is stupid fans, not racist ones. You get 16 games a year to win. NFL fans want to win. They honestly don’t care if you’re purple if you can win. But in Philly and New York, you will get booed and criticised for no good reason. This is the same crowd that threw snowballs at Santa Claus, cheered Michael Irvin being taken off in a stretcher, and thought Randall Cunningham was God (until he wasn’t anymore). They don’t have an issue with you because you’re black, they have an issue with you because you’re a quarterback that’s been with the team for nine seasons and have zero rings. They would be harsh on anyone in that situation.
Not everything in this world comes down to race. In football especially, it comes down to winning. McNabb was never wanted from day one in Philadelphia. It was never about hating McNabb or his race, it was because he was not Ricky Williams. If they had drafted a white quarterback in the same spot, and achieved the exact same level of success, he’d be hearing it now too. When you are drafted that high, and play for nine seasons, cities demand results. Going to the Super Bowl and a bunch of NFC title games is nice, but it’s not winning the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning was hearing the same thing a year ago, and it wasn’t because he was white. It was because he had no rings.
Suck it up McNabb, and go out there and win back the fans. It’s not about race. It’s about being in Philadelphia for the better part of a decade and not having a title. If you’re a starting quarterback in the NFL for nine seasons, and you don’t have a title, you are going to be criticised. It’s that simple. Ask Brett Favre, John Elway and Dan Marino. Before Favre and Elway won theirs, they were criticised quite heavily. Stop using your race as an excuse, and look at everything else before you make accusations about why people are so harsh on you.
