The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have decided to reinvent themselves, because apparently it was the name and uniform that kept them in the basement all these years. No longer are they the Devil Rays, wearers of black and green. Now they are the “Rays“, proudly sporting blue and another kind of blue. If this doesn’t scream “playoffs”, I don’t know what does.
In other baseball news…
There may be some big names moved this offseason, as Johan Santana, Miguel Cabrera and Dan Haren may all be on the trading block. Haren may just be the next victim of the Oakland front office, while Santana and Cabrera are approaching massive payday in cities that may not be able to afford them.
Expect Cabrera to be moved for some team’s top two prospects, a formula that has led the Marlins to two World Series in ten years. They may have a fire sale every few years, but they get more in return for their stars than anyone else.
If Santana does in fact become available, I’d expect him to end up in New York, with either the Mets or the Yankees, or perhaps in Boston. I suspect the Twins will do whatever they can to resign him, but he’s going into the last year of a contract and is likely to get $20 million or more next year as a free agent.
And the A-Rod sweepstakes marches on. More on that soon…
