Despite the Breaking News headline all over the television and Internet, apparently Barry Bonds did not fail a drug test in 2001. After being the top story on ESPN.com and many other sites, as well as ESPNEWS, it turns out it was all one big typo.
From ESPN.com:
“U.S. attorney spokesman Josh Eaton now says that the reference in Thursday’s government court filing regarding Bonds testing positive was actually referring to a November 2000 test that was previously disclosed in the indictment of Bonds and had already been reported.”
Is it me, or is Bonds somehow going to come out of this Mitchell Report/Steroids in Baseball saga about as guilty as when he went in? As long as he keeps denying everything, they are having a quite difficult time actually proving anything against him. Compare Bonds to Roger Clemens right now and who comes out looking cleaner? Bonds does.
Unfortunately, the damage was already done on this story, as most people will never forget seeing the “Bonds Failed Drug Test in 2001″ headline. I’ve defended Bonds before, and still do, to an extent. He may have been juiced, but at the time he broke no rules in baseball.
It’s funny how this all started as a witchhunt to discredit Bonds and turned into the discrediting of every star of this generation, while Bonds is still in the exact same spot he was in 2002.
I will not turn this into another defending Barry piece, but I thought I needed to do my part to help spread the story of the not-failed drug test.
