News and Links for March 31, 2008…
According to Boxing Scene, Mikkel Kessler’s abrupt withdrawal from his fight with Edison Miranda was because of his plan to move to light-heavyweight. Basically, what they are saying is that when Danny Green announced his retirement, Kessler saw an opportunity to move up in weight and step right into a title shot for the vacant belt. I don’t know if this report is true or not, but the longer Kessler goes without getting into the ring, the worse it looks for him. It’s starting to look as if Joe Calzaghe broke him mentally, and Kessler is hesitant to get back in the mix of things.
Speaking of Miranda, word around campus is that he will finally land that rematch with middleweight titlist Arthur Abraham. Abraham defended his portion of the crown this weekend, and is looking to fight in the U.S. on June 21. Miranda has been seeking a rematch since he lost a unanimous decision in Germany to Abraham in a controversial bout. Abraham had his jaw broken, and fought the second half of the fight looking like he was chewing on a golf ball, while Miranda had five points deducted in the fight. While I agree that the shenanigans in the ring surrounding Abraham’s jaw were a bit sketchy, I thought he clearly won the fight and the point deductions were well earned. Nevertheless, I’m excited to see a rematch.
Now that March Madness is down to the Final Four, it is clear that there is an undisputed champion of Worst Commercial of the Tournament. And the winner is…that annoying-as-hell car commercial with the guy beeping the alarm in the showroom. I don’t know what car it was for because I have muted the commercial for the last week, but I for one will never, ever buy a car from that company. Here’s an idea: let’s make a commercial about an asshole who harasses customers in a car dealership — but let’s make it as annoying as possible. Then we’ll run it 15 times an hour, during one of the most popular television events of the year. Genius.
Panaramic Art finally lost. One of the most impressive streaks in harness racing history ended at 20 straight wins.
Speaking of harness racing, Holborn Hanover died this week. Holborn Hanover won the Meadowlands Pace in 2004, and owns the fastest mile in history in 146.4.
It’s officially baseball season. I know that Boston and Oakland played last week — and I do love me some 3:00am sports — but the season is really here now. I know that because of that annoying sound my television started to make Sunday night. I don’t know the technical name for the sound, but it sounds a lot like Joe Morgan. It’s unbearable.
