Opening Day Thoughts

lukekohler.com: Latest post

It’s officially Opening Day in Major League Baseball. I know we’ve had our share of games played already — a few in Japan, a Sunday Night opener in D.C. — but this is the real opening day. As I sit here trying to watch bits of every game, I have my share of Opening Day thoughts.

I’m not big on live blogging, but I suppose that’s what this will be throughout Opening Day…

- Hawk Harrelson is in mid-season form. It’s only the third inning, but “Big Jim” has already “put it on the boooaaarrdd, yesss!” twice. No announcer in the history of sports (college homers aside) can be so awful, so one-sided, yet so enjoyably entertaining for those reasons than Ken “Hawk” Harrelson. You may remember Hawk as the only cat to make the top five best and top five worst on my Rating the MLB Announcers piece last year.

- Kieth Hernandez’s mustache is still intact. Not even the year 2008 can tear that thing off of Kieth’s lip.

- DirecTV is off to a surprisingly good start. Since there were a few rain delays in the morning, I found myself watching the Tigers and Royals all afternoon, and to my pleasant surprise, I was able to watch both the Kansas City and the Detroit feeds of the game. That’s a new one for the Extra Innings package. Let’s see how long it lasts.

- Don’t think I’ve forgotten about you Extra Innings. I will be watching your every move this year to see how you’ve changed (if at all) your archaic blackout policy.

- I’m glad to see Magglio Ordenez still has that exact same hair from last season. Not enough guys really go for that Menudo look anymore. The amazing part is that his hair is exactly the same as it was in September. I don’t think it’s grown at all, which means he actually gets it cut to stay that same poofy length. Good stuff.

- Johan Santana is good at baseball. Facing the Marlins and Nationals 36 times this year, and the pitcher’s spot every nine batters should equal a huge NL debut season for him.
