Byrd Dropping to Light Heavyweight

News and Links for April 4, 2008…

Chris Byrd is dropping below the heavyweight division. While it’s been rumored for several years that Byrd might eventually cut down to the cruiserweight division, Byrd apparently had such an easy time making weight that he will go all the way to light heavyweight. If Byrd can comfortably make 175, he will make for one very dangerous light heavyweight contender. Word is that Byrd weighed 173 last week at the gym and is looking to fight on ESPN2 on May 16.

Bernard Hopkins is claiming that Joe Calzaghe will be his final opponent. We’ll believe it when we see it.

The Mikkel Kessler – Anthony Mundine – Edison Miranda fiasco keeps getting more and more odd. Here’s the best I can do to summarize. Kessler agrees to fight Miranda on May 24. Kessler than petitions the WBA to be named Mundine’s mandatory. Kessler is named mandatory, and pulls out of Miranda fight without explanation or a fight in place against Mundine. Mundine’s scheduled fight with Sam Soliman is not scrapped, upsetting Kessler, who thinks that the contract with Soliman should be wiped out so he can get his fight. Miranda and his people are suing Kessler and his people for the way they pulled out of that bout. I’m not sure how all of this will play out, but Kessler is losing credibility as someone to work with in boxing very, very quickly.

  1. As the promoter for Sam Soliman we are thinking of filing suit against Mogens Palle and his team for defamation and attemping to interfere with our contract. I don’t believe the WBA will bend to his outrageous demands. He lives in another century where he thinks he can issue commands and have people bend to his will. The sad thing is he represents a great fighter who most likely doesn’t know how badly he is being represented. It is the fighter who will suffer since the old out of touch Palle will soon be gone from the scene. A little man trying to show he is relevant. Something he never was. 2. Jeff, thanks for the comment. It seems like you have quite a situation on your hands here. I agree that Kessler’s people don’t realize what they are doing to a great fighter’s career, and I don’t think Kessler realizes how poorly he is being represented. Good luck keeping the Mundine fight, you deserve the shot first.
