Ozzie Guillen Pisses Off Puerto Rico

lukekohler.com: Latest post

Ozzie Guillen is at it again, causing controversy when he didn’t need to. This time, Puerto Rico has it’s sights set on Guillen as he “Oh, no you didn’t”-ed Roberto Clemente, a Puerto Rican no-no.

Guillen had the gall to call Clemente the third best Puerto Rican baseball player of all-time. Whether it’s true or not is not the issue. You just don’t call Roberto Clemente anything but the greatest ballplayer to ever come out of Puerto Rico.

That’s like calling anyone but Muhammad Ali the greatest heavyweight of all-time. While you may have a good argument, and may even be right, it’s become just blasphemous to even hint that it’s not true. Same thing goes for Clemente and Puerto Rico.

Guillen told the Detroit Free Press that he thought Clemente was number three, behind Ivan Rodriguez and Roberto Alomar. Statistically, Clemente has an edge over both of them in batting average, home runs, and RBI. Guillen gave the edge to Rodriguez for being a catcher that played so much of his career in the Texas heat, and presumably gave Alomar points for defense as well.

I’m not here to argue right or wrong, Guillen may have a good case. But I absolutely hate when any topic becomes un-arguable — meaning that the very mention of something being true or untrue is dismissed without argument, because the answer is so obvious.

The fun of sports is debating opinions and arguing. I respect that Guillen has an unpopular opinion (at least in Puerto Rico) and is willing to say it. Having said that, he best have eyes in the back of his head the next time he travels to Puerto Rico.
