Abraham and Miranda Set to Do it Again

lukekohler.com: Latest post

Undefeated middleweight titlist Arthur Abraham will make his American debut in a much anticipated rematch with Edison Miranda on June 21 on SHOWTIME. Abraham and Miranda fought in 2006 in Germany, with Abraham winning a very controversial decision.

The first time they fought, Abraham had his jaw broken and was given nearly five minutes to recover and be examined, without the referee stopping the fight. After being allowed to continue, Miranda was deducted five points for fouls, leading to Abraham winning a unanimous decision. To be fair, Miranda would have lost a majority decision even without the point deductions.

The Miranda camp has since argued that the fight should have been stopped when Abraham’s jaw was broken, especially after it seems to be heard from Abraham that he couldn’t continue. Abraham has brushed this off, saying that if Miranda couldn’t beat him with a broken jaw, he never will be able to beat him.

I’ve watched the first fight several times, and while I think the handling of the broken jaw was incorrect, the bout was comfortably won by Abraham. If you rule that the fight goes on, then I’ve scored it for Abraham every time I’ve watched it, with or without the point deductions. For the record, I thought every point deduction was warranted.

Having said all that, I can’t wait for the rematch because the first fight was a war. And credit must be given to SHOWTIME for picking this fight up and making it happen.

The original bout was fought at middleweight, but the rematch will take place at a catchweight of 166 pounds. This fight is without a doubt “must-see” boxing — true Fight of the Year kind of potential.

Miranda was set to fight Mikkel Kessler in May, but Kessler pulled out unexpectedly, leading to this fight being possible. Abraham is looking to make a fight with middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik, and a win here will likely set that up for either the end of 2008 or early 2009.
