No sooner were the Joe Calzaghe – Bernard Hopkins scores announced by Michael Buffer, names began to fly as to Calzaghe would be fighting next. It only took a few more minutes for rumors to begin as to who, if anyone, Hopkins would fight next.
For Calzaghe, the two names that have come up the most are middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik and former pound-for-pound king Roy Jones, Jr. Jones was on hand for the fight, doing the radio broadcast for a European network and quickly made it known that he intends to fight Calzaghe later this year.
Jones told ITV after the fight that a deal is in place for him to fight Calzaghe at Millennium Stadium in Wales on November 15. While Jones has been hesitant to travel for fights in the past, and has been notoriously difficult to negotiate with, he seems to understand that he’s no longer the man, thus making him more willing to concede points in contract talks.
A fight between Jones and Calzaghe in Cardiff would certainly put 50,000 in the seats and make both fighters loads of money. Calzaghe’s promoter Frank Warren said that nothing is in place and no decision will be made on Calzaghe’s end for at least a month.
As for Hopkins, he said after the fight that Golden Boy has already received a call from Don King, hoping to make a rematch between Hopkins and Felix Trinidad. Hopkins beat Tito quite decisively in late 2001, marking the beginning of the end for Trinidad. At 43, Hopkins is still undecided on his future, but he just doesn’t strike me as being done.
I suspect that we won’t have any deals signed by Calzaghe or Hopkins for another month or so. More on their futures as they decide.
UPDATE: Hopkins vs. Trinidad II is a no-go. Hopkins isn’t interested. Trinidad will once again try to secure a Jermain Taylor fight. I don’t know how Trinidad has remained relevant and sought after, but it’s impressive.
