If you were to sum up the Joe Calzaghe – Bernard Hopkins fight from this past weekend in one word, it would be: ugly. Lot’s of grabbing, holding, Hopkins using his head, Calzaghe landing low blows, etc. Well, as it turns out, part of it was on purpose.
I don’t mean that B-Hop meant to make it ugly and hold and wrestle, because we all knew that was going to happen before the fight began. What I’m talking about is the Calzaghe low blows. Apparently, at least one of them was intentional.
“When I hit him there in the second round, that was proper deliberate,” Calzaghe told the London Daily Mail. “He’d knocked me down in the first so I had to give him a dig, didn’t I?”
Calzaghe said this as he was explaining that Hopkins’ antics in the tenth round were nothing but bad acting, and that Hopkins was faking it to buy time, something quite clear to anyone watching the fight.
I don’t recall ever hearing a fighter say that he threw a low blow on purpose. As much as I think that Calzaghe won the fight, I never like hearing something like this. Hopkins is the dirty fighter, we all knew that. No need to sink to that level. That’s something that Miguel Cotto would do. Just ask Zab Judah.
Speculation continues that Calzaghe will take on Roy Jones, Jr. in November, in what could be his final professional fight. Originally, it was reported that the fight could land in Cardiff, Wales on November 15, but apparently Millennium Stadium is not available on that date.
That has led to speculation that this proposed mega-fight could take place in Las Vegas on that same date.
According to Calzaghe’s promoter Frank Warren: “Joe is ‘the man’ now, he is the first fighter to hold the Ring Magazine super-middle and light-heavyweight titles concurrently, and if Jones wants to fight Joe, he will have to agree to our terms. Who’s the legend now?”
This will be interesting, as Jones has always been notoriously difficult to negotiate with. If he really wants a shot at Joe, he will have to agree to Calzaghe’s terms. I have a hunch that this fight happens this year, though.
