There may in fact be a super-showdown between 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin and potential Triple Crown winner Big Brown later in the year — at least if Suffolk Downs has anything to say about it.
The fine folks at Suffolk Downs in Boston are offering up a $5 million purse in the Massachusetts Handicap if both horses enter the race undefeated. Each horse would also be welcome to a $1 million participation bonus. If either horse has a loss entering the race, the purse would drop to $3 million with a $500,000 participation bonus, as long as Big Brown does in fact win the Triple Crown.
Obviously the track stands to make all of that money back from the tremendous handle that that race would produce. Taking a percentage of all parimutuel wagers, the huge amount bet on the race would likely produce plenty to pay the purse with.
The other potential race that they could both run in together would be the Breeder’s Cup Classic, which is for 3-year olds and up, making both Big Brown and Curlin eligible.
Big Brown’s trainer has said that he would like to run him a few more times this season, but there is a very good chance that his owners choose to shut him down much earlier than the Breeder’s Cup. The bottom line is that if Big Brown wins the Triple Crown, he becomes a cash printing machine, which often trumps really fast horse.
