Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones On for September

lukekohler.com: Latest post

A battle of two boxing legends will take place later this year in New York, as current pound-for-pound superstar and two-weight champion Joe Calzaghe will square off with former middleweight, super-middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight champion Roy Jones, Jr. Jones has won three straight fights since his last loss and Calzaghe is the reigning undefeated champ at both super-middleweight and light-heavyweight.

The fight will take place on September 20 at Madison Square Garden.

In order to make the fight happen, Jones parted ways with promoter Don King for this fight, allowing Jones and Calzaghe to co-promote the fight themselves. Word on the street was that King owed Jones a handsome amount of money from the back-end of the Felix Trinidad fight, and agreed to allow Jones to promote the Calzaghe fight on his own if he forgave the debt.

Despite this being another fight that would have been better and more exciting six years ago, it’s still a great matchup. Jones is clearly not the Roy Jones that won the heavyweight title, but he’s certainly closer to it now than he was when he fought Tarver-Johnson-Tarver for his three (legit) losses. Calzaghe is one of the top two fighters on Earth. No matter how you shape it, it’s a great fight.
