Dear NBC: Thank You For Ruining the Olympics
The following is the text to the letter I’ve just emailed to NBC. If you are on the West Coast and are as sick as I am of the tape delays that we are subjected to over and over again, I recommend also contacting NBC and letting them know. This is ridiculous.

Dear NBC/Universal,
Thank you for ruining the 2008 Olympics for those of us on the West Coast. There is nothing better than knowing exactly what happens in a “live” sporting event. It was bad enough for you to delay the opening ceremonies for a half a day (not to mention the CGI effects), but now you’ve succeeded in taking all of the suspense and enjoyment out of the games.
Your online coverage is great, as is the actual coverage on television. I commend you on your selection of broadcasters and use of technology.
But the fact remains that in 2008, no sports should be subject to a tape delay. In today’s digital/Internet era, it is impossible to wait until the airing on your network to see the results of major events. I can not, and will not, sit in silence until you determine that it is time for me to see what happened. The results are posted on the Internet before your network airs the events, and there is no avoiding the information.
For these reasons, I, and many people like me, have no need to watch your prime time airing of the Olympics. I will continue to watch your actual live coverage, but the events that you are making your fortunes on by airing them in prime time are not reaching me. For the record, I also happen to be in most of your advertiser’s target demographic, and I will not see a single prime time commercial.
And if airing it on a delay isn’t bad enough, you have the nerve to lie to us and put “live” on the screen. Do you have any idea how insulting it is to be treated like this. Well done on completely ostracizing half of your (potential) audience.
So once again, thank you NBC for ruining the Olympics for the entire West Coast. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
