The proposed mega-fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao is off. Negotiations between the sides broke down this week when neither side would give in when it came to percentages for the two fighters.
While I am certainly not one of them, there were many people who were hoping this fight would happen. As someone who actually appreciates and cares about the sport of boxing, let me be the first to say thank you to both fighters for not fighting each other. This was a waste of time to even negotiate, and the fight was a terrible idea.
I know there are some that may disagree, particularly those who write for ESPN.com, but the fact is that Manny Pacquiao would have gotten hurt in this fight, perhaps seriously. This fight was an awful idea that could have ended Pacquiao’s career, and seriously damaged his well-being. Let Pacquiao fight lightweights and De La Hoya fight junior middleweights.
I was going to write a lengthy piece on why this fight was a bad idea, but now that it appears that it won’t happen, I’ll save it for another day.
Now, if only we can get the Kelly Pavlik – Bernard Hopkins fight called off…
