The LPGA has mandated that all of it’s members be able to speak English by the end of 2009 or they will risk losing their membership in the league.
Wouldn’t it be easier if the LPGA just said that they were no longer accepting applications from Koreans? Really, that’s all this is. The South Koreans that are dominating the LPGA either need to become more American, or they will not be welcome playing in this American based league. Right or wrong, that’s the direction that the LPGA has decided to go in.
Remember when sports used to be about an “athlete’s” ability to perform at their sport. Sure, Ichiro speaks some English, but when is the last time you saw him do an interview in English? There are many, many boxers who don’t speak English as well, and while it may be inconvenient, it doesn’t mean they should have to find a new job.
Since when has doing interviews, giving speeches and being able to use “golfspeak” been a prerequisite for playing professional golf? Their job is to hit the ball and put it in the hole in less strokes than their fellow South Koreans.
I can fully support the LPGA recommending that their players all speak English, possibly even levying fines if no effort is made. But to revoke a tour card over this? That’s just stupid.
Just ask Augusta National how much golf people like to be told what to do.
