Former cruiserweight titlist David Haye is moving up to heavyweight, but it appears that he is afraid to fight any of the big men he keeps calling out.
Haye apparently pulled out of his most recent matchup with undefeated prospect Kevin Johnson, in order to take undefeated prospect JD Chapman. The difference between them is that Johnson is a legitimate prospect, and Chapman is a bad fighter with a hyped up record against nobodies. Haye apparently wants no part of any good fighter.
Since moving up to heavyweight, Haye has called out Wladimir Klitschko and Sam Peters, among others, but doesn’t seem to want to earn a chance to fight any of them.
According to Boxing Scene, Monte Barrett, Eddie Chambers, James Toney, Andrew Golota, and Hasim Rahman are all ready to fight Haye, but Haye clearly wants no part of them.
Here’s the thing — if you’re going to talk smack like Haye did, you must be prepared to back it up. You can’t call out the top heavyweights and promise to knock them all out and be afraid to get in the ring with B-level heavyweights to earn the righ to fight them.
David Haye was a fine cruiserweight, but at this rate, he’ll never be a heavyweight that is taken seriously.
