For the last year, I’ve been waiting patiently for Kimbo Slice to fight a real fighter, so I can cash my ticket betting against him. It’s been well known for some time to anyone who follows MMA to the slightest degree that Kimbo is not a very good mixed-martial artist. He’s an overrated street fighter, who was bound to get exposed.
Well, it finally happened, and no one thought this was the fight that it was going to happen.
Kimbo Slice got knocked out in 14 seconds against the first real fighter he fought, but he wasn’t supposed to fight him. Ken Shamrock pulled out of the fight earlier in the day, allowing Seth Petruzelli to step in and take his place. Shamrock was hand picked to get knocked out by Kimbo, but Petruzelli is an actual accomplished professional.
If there was a line on this fight, there’s a lot of us that would have been cashing tickets this week. But now we’ll never get that chance to anticipate Kimbo’s impending loss. Instead we were surprised by it.
The bottom line is that Kimbo is a sideshow, not a real fighter. He’ll continue to fill rooms and draw audiences, but he’s got a long way to go before he is taken seriously as a professional fighter.
Nevertheless, congratulations to Mr. Petruzelli. He should be able to parlay this into some bigger fights, maybe even a rematch with Kimbo. Then, I can finally have my chance to bet against Kevin Ferguson.
