Tony Romo could be out for up to a month, after suffering a broken pinkie finger in Dallas’ overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals Sunday. Romo broke the finger on the first play of overtime. Okay, but how do you explain his play the rest of the game?
Dallas will now turn the ball over (no pun intended) to 40-year old Brad Johnson. Johnson was the quarterback for Minnesota as recently as 2006, but has thrown just 11 passes as Romo’s backup since arriving for the 2007 season. He has not thrown a pass this year.
Romo will likely miss the next three games, as the Cowboys have a bye week four weeks from now. More than likely, Romo should be able to return after the bye week.
Sunday marked the first time in his last nine games that Romo did not throw an interception, but he made up for it by fumbling three times, losing one of them (not counting the clear fumble for a touchdown that was overturned by “tuck-rule”).
Now we’ll get to see what Wade Phillips is made of. He’s coached this team to a 3-3 mark, but his talented players have made him 4-2. Without Romo, Phillips may learn the hard way that the strength of the Cowboys is their running game, and not Tony Romo. Jerry Jones may learn the hard way that he drastically overpaid for Romo with his six-year, $75 million deal. Romo is a good quarterback, but I guarantee that before this contract is up, Cowboy fans and Jones are regretting this deal.
Once a gun-slingin’, turnover machine, celebrity distraction, always a gun-slingin’, turnover machine, celebrity distraction. This will be a good test to see how Romo handles adversity, because he has struggled in the face of it in the past. But unless Romo makes some drastic changes to his game, he’ll always be the stud fantasy QB drafted in the first round who never wins a Super Bowl. Think young Peyton Manning and young Brett Favre. Until Romo learns to hold onto the football, Cowboy fans will regret his contract.
In the meantime, let’s see if Terrell Owens quits when his quarterback gets hurt like Randy Moss has.
