How much of the Dallas Cowboys can one really take. I grew up rooting for them, and I can’t handle this onslaught of news today. One player out, one player in, and one out that may be in.
First, we find out that Adam P. Jones has been suspended yet again. This time it’s for what Commissioner Roger Goodell called a “disturbing pattern of behavior was clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL.”
I can’t say I blame Pacman. I mean, how could anyone learn their lesson after eight previous run-ins with the law (not including college)? Pacman deserves a tenth chance. How should he have known not to get into a fight at a hotel, when he’s only coming off of a one-year suspension, and is currently on probation with the NFL? You can’t blame a guy for having a drink and throwing a few punches when he’s prohibited from having any “alcohol-related incidents.” Free Pacman.
Really, when is this guy going to learn? The answer to that one is simple: never. The real question should be when will Jerry Jones and the Cowboys learn. That answer, sadly, is also likely never.
At least Clinton Portis has his back. That Portis sure is smart.
On the bright side, Cowboy fans, Dallas has acquired Roy Williams (no, the other one) from Detroit for way too many draft picks. Dallas gave a first, third and sixth round draft pick in 2009, in exchange for Williams and a seventh round pick. This should make T.O. real happy. Now he’s got Brad Johnson throwing to Roy Williams. You thought he was pissed when Romo was only going to him 19 times a game.
I like Roy Williams the receiver, but this is going to tear this team apart even more. Now you have two receivers who want the ball on every play, you may be seeing Brad Johnson not get it to them for the next three games, and you gave up way too much to get him. We are watching Jerry Jones morph into George Steinbrenner circa 2002-2003.
But there may be good news in Dallas. It seems that Brett Favre called Tony Romo, and they had a good old gunslinger-to-gunslinger talk, in which Favre basically explained to Romo that only women sit out games with injuries. Now Romo is looking into sacking up and playing with four fingers on his throwing hand.
I say go for it. What’s he going to do, fumble or throw a bunch of interceptions? He does that just fine with five fingers.
I’m sure Romo already had some plans to go to Mexico on a quick vacation with Jessica Lachey, but maybe Favre talked him into sticking around and trying to play.
Realistically, Dallas is better off letting Romo miss a few games. If that is what it takes for Wade Phillips to learn how to run the football and control the clock, that’s what they need to do. Romo and Phillips have fallen into the shootout trap that many high-powered offenses do. It makes you good at scoring, particularly against bad teams, but hurts your chances at winning against teams that slow you down. Let Romo heal, and Phillips learn to win without him. The franchise will be better off in the long run.
