In an exciting and controversial finish, Lucian Bute narrowly escaped the clutches of defeat against Librade Andrade.
Bute, winning comfortably on all three scorecards, completely ran out of gas in the 12th round, stumbling around the ring. For some reason, Bute decided to trade with Andrade in the last round, but certainly took the worst of it. After doing all he could to stay on his feet until the final bell, Andrade finally floored Bute with just two seconds left in the last round. Bute eventually made it to his feet, but the referee took nearly 20 seconds to count, pausing in the middle to tell Andrade to go back to the corner he was already in. After stopping the count, referee Marlon Wright never checked to see if Bute could continue, allowing him to stand, slumped in the corner against the ropes. The bell rang, saving Bute.
The entire fight was refereed rather one-sidedly, with warnings coming to Andrade after clinches initiated by Bute, and multiple times, Andrade was pulled off of Bute after a big blow, then warned for something trivial, allowing Bute 10-15 seconds to recover.
The fight was extremely reminiscent of the Vassiliy Jirov – Joe Mesi fight from 2004, in which Mesi struggled to survive the 12th round, and was unable to continue, but won the fight on points.
In this case, there is no way Bute would have survived even another punch without being knocked out, but his ability to get to his feet kept his record unblemished.
With all of the excitement and controversy, it seems very likely that there will be a rematch between these two either at a neutral site (this one in Bute’s adopted hometown of Montreal) or at the very least with a more impartial referee.
Either way, Bute has shown he can be beaten, and Andrade reaffirmed what we knew: that he can eat punches all night long and not only not get hurt, but still have enough left to knock you out. A rematch surely will be interesting.
