Michigan State Victims of Incorrect Call

lukekohler.com: Latest post

Michigan benefited from an incorrect call, as they were awarded a touchdown on a play in which a player caught a pass and landed several feet out of bounds. The officials incorrectly ruled that since the Michigan player’s foot hit the pylon on the way down, it was a touchdown.

However, according to the NCAA football rulebook (PDF), Rule 4-2, Article 1. b. “A player or an airborne player who touches a pylon is out of bounds.”

It is a clear as day rule, and one that should not be missed by any Division-I referee. The play was not even close, and Michigan State should not have given up seven points.

A missed judgement call is acceptable. Not knowing a simple rule of football is unacceptable. The referees and video replay referees in this game should suffer the consequences of a terrible call like this.

This has to be one of the worst calls that I’ve ever witnessed. A 10-year old kid could have told you that this was no catch. The fact that a “professional” team of referees could not get this right is a sad statement about the current world of college officiating.
