Calzaghe Not Interested in Hopkins Rematch

In the wake of his impressive victory over Roy Jones, Jr., Joe Calzaghe has had a few names thrown at him for possible fights if he continues his career. Among them are 24-year old future star and current titlist Chad Dawson, and old timer Bernard Hopkins, who Calzaghe defeated earlier this year.

Calzaghe has finally addressed the issue, saying that he has no interest in fighting Hopkins again, and I for one, completely respect that decision.

Many people will say that Calzaghe is “ducking” a rematch with Hopkins, but the truth is that Calzaghe beat him fair and square once, and Hopkins was completely disrespectful throughout the buildup to that fight. Hopkins needs Calzaghe, not the other way around. Hopkins had his chance and lost.

Now Calzaghe is speaking up about it. “Super” Joe said in a recent interview with The Mirror, via Boxing Scene:

“Screw Hopkins, man. He got his a*** kicked by a white boy. He’s got to accept that. He’s an idiot. A complete a**hole. I don’t want to give him a rematch. It wouldn’t be a good fight. The guy’s a racist. He was never going to give me any credit,” Calzaghe told The Mirror. “The way he fought against me in Las Vegas was cowardly because he held on all night and feigned being hit by low blows. He tried to steal the fight.”

Calzaghe is absolutely right. Hopkins wouldn’t shut up leading up to the fight about how he’ll never lose to a white boy, then proceeded to get beat by a white boy. Just because Hopkins looked better against Kelly Pavlik doesn’t make him a worthy opponent for Calzaghe. Perhaps Calzaghe knows how to “fight black” well enough to beat Hopkins.

When you are at the level of these fighters, you shouldn’t have to prove yourself twice. Calzaghe won the fight against Hopkins. Sure, some thought it was close, or even a Hopkins win, but it was a close Calzaghe win. There’s no need for Calzaghe to give Hopkins a payday when he has nothing to gain from the fight.

Maybe this will learn B-Hop not to be such an asshole all the time. There’s a reason that neither Roy Jones nor Calzaghe are willing to give the guy a payday. He’s just an asshole.

Well said, Mr. Calzaghe. I fully support your decision to not fight Hopkins.
