Please Evander, Don’t Make Me Watch You Die

Despite all of the wishes of the boxing world, and all of the senses of those surrounding him, Evander Holyfield is preparing to get back into the ring once again, and once again he stands no chance of winning.

Holyfield will likely be taking on Russian giant Nicolai Valuev, who stands at 7 feet tall and weighs in the neighborhood of 320 pounds. He’s been beaten just once in 50 fights, and while not many people will call him the best heavyweight in the world, he’s still pretty good.

Evander Holyfield can no longer compete with “pretty good.”

Holyfield is just 6-6 in his last 12 fights and hasn’t beaten a reputable opponent since 2002. He was beaten soundly in his last fight by the much smaller, and far less dangerous Sultan Ibragimov.

Make no mistake about it: Evander Holyfield stands a real chance of being seriously injured in this fight. This fight should not happen. If anyone who is in a position to stop this fight has any brains or conscience, they will stop this fight from happening.

I’m not kidding — Holyfield has no chance to win and a large chance of getting really hurt. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Holyfield could die in this fight.

The man lacks the skills to compete at the top level anymore, and now he’ll give up 100 pounds and 10 inches to a man that is in his prime.

Holyfield truly believes that this fight will be determined by God, and not by the extreme difference in size, skill level and ability to defend themselves, all of which Holyfield is at a sever disadvantage.

I don’t want to watch Evander Holyfield die. I don’t even want to watch him courageously fight for 12 rounds and lose. I don’t want to ever see him again in a boxing ring. Rocky was a good series of movies, but they are fiction. Men who are 46-years old don’t suddenly get younger. When you get your ass kicked by a B-level heavyweight at 45, you don’t move up to an A-level guy at 46.

I feel for Holyfield’s financial situation. But this isn’t the answer. Invent a grill or something, but taking $600,000 to go to Russian and get beat up is a bad idea.

Even if you don’t believe me that Holyfield may get hurt, you must believe me that this fight is terrible for boxing. No good can come of it. All Holyfield is doing is taking up a fight that could be competitively fought by anyone else. And by anyone, I mean anyone.

So I’m being serious when I say: Please Evander, don’t make us watch you die.
