Links: Taylor Pummels Lacy; Looks To Awaits Calzaghe

News and Links for November 17, 2008…

Jermain Taylor thoroughly outboxed Jeff Lacy on Saturday in a “crossroads” fight that he needed to look good in. It was Taylor’s most aesthetically pleasing fight since before he was a champion and a solid performance that was much needed for him. After the fight, he mentioned Joe Calzaghe, and you have to think that on name recognition alone, Taylor’s on Calzaghe’s short list. Having said that, he doesn’t deserve, nor would he have much of a chance of winning such a fight. Having also said that, if we’ve learned anything from Taylor, it’s that if anyone can ugly up a fight and steal a decision, it’s Jermain.

Brock Lesnar beat Randy Couture in what will most likely be the most successful UFC pay-per-view in their history. Watching the PPV, there were nearly all short fights, leading to a large portion of the broadcast showing undercard fights on tape. Just curious, what were the people in the arena watching?

Ricky Hatton told his new trainer Floyd Mayweather, Sr. that he won’t give up drinking to keep his weight lower between fights, no matter what Floyd wants.

All politics aside, I think any true sports fan can get behind President-elect Obama if he’s serious that he wants to use the strength of his office to get us a college football playoff.

Have you seen the catch by Isaac Stockton of Chadron State College? It’s good.

Curlin is pretty much retired, but his connections are willing to run him one final time if the price is right.

Here’s a fascinating article by Bill Finley for ESPN.com about thoroughbred horse racing, and the comparison between American and Australian horses. Here in the Colonies, horses run four to six times a year, while in Australia, the same breed runs ten times as often. The hypothesis is that perhaps thoroughbreds are not fragile by nature, but overnurtured to the point of injury risk. It’s the chicken-egg type of argument similar to baseball’s pitch counts. Is it the 105 pitches a guy threw, or the fact that he only threw 105 pitches that gets people injured? Is it the racing or the standing in a stall for 23 hours a day that makes a horse vulnerable?
Very interesting.
