Tebow Wins BCS, MOP, Brennaman’s Heart

lukekohler.com: Latest post

Tim Tebow turned in a solid game, but far from his best, in the BCS title game against Oklahoma, earning him the most outstanding player award, and somewhere along the way, the key to Thom Brennaman’s heart.

I’m a big Thom Brennaman fan, having worked with him for several years in Phoenix, but the BCS title game was a bit over the top with the non-stop love-fest for Tebow. At one point in the fourth quarter, I was pretty sure that Tebow was playing against 11 other Tebows for the right to be king Tebow. There was seldom a mention of Oklahoma or Sam Bradford, and Tebow’s overwhelming average-ness was overlooked in favor of his brighter moments.

When Tebow threw two terrible interceptions in the first half, it was more about Tebow’s struggles than the quality defense that Oklahoma was playing. When Percy Harvin took control of the game and led Florida to victory, it was Tebow’s three-yard dives that were making the FOX crew blush.

Sure, Tebow is a fine college football player, but he’s not the world’s best quarterback. Anyone who’s watched the man throw a football would quickly agree that Tebow would be about the fourth best quarterback in the Big 12. But when Brennaman and Co. brought up a comment from an Oklahoma player that said just that, Brennaman dismissed it as perhaps the most ridiculous thing that’s ever been said.

Of course, between Bradford, Tebow, Graham Harrell, Colt McCoy and Zac Robinson, there are exactly zero quarterbacks who will make it at the next level. Cry all you want about how good they all are, but the fact remains that if you are a quarterback in the Big 12, you will fail in the NFL. Quick, name one that didn’t… I thought so. They are all tremendous athletes and each one is a fantastic college quarterback, but they all have and will continue to struggle when facing a real defense. But I digress.

Tebow is one of the best college quarterbacks we’ll ever see, as far as the variety of things he does well and the inability of college defenses to stop him. He’s right there with Vince Young in his last year of college. Neither were amazing at anything, but they are so good at so many things that they are tough to deal with at that level. And ask Vince Young about the defenses in the NFL.

And another college football season comes to a conclusion, and once again the system that is in place failed miserably, while the people that support the failing system stand by it, looking like complete assholes. Another great season of games, yet another season ruined.

Congratulations to Florida on an outstanding season and a BCS title, and to Utah on being the national champions.
