Though he wasn’t wearing his halo or robe, Tim Tebow told a crowd of 40,000 followers that he would be returning to Florida for his senior season, just three days after winning his second BCS title.
After listening to many in the media, it has become clear that Tebow is a true college football deity. The man can do no wrong (even when throwing two terrible interceptions and hearing fake whistles), and he single-handedly was able to hold Oklahoma to just 14 points. If that’s not a holy accomplishment, I don’t know what is.
While the story will be that Tebow returned to win another title and to finish what he started (like a great kid should do), the truth is that Tebow had no other options. Going pro is not in his future like many of the other underclassmen that have/had real choices to make. Tebow only has one chance left to play quarterback at a high level, and that is by returning to Florida.

I’ve already made it clear that I think that the Big 12 quarterbacks are all going to be busts, but Tebow is more than that. Tebow is a guy that will likely never get a chance to be a quarterback in the NFL, and he’s learning right now that he is only a college quarterback.
I have no doubt that Tim Tebow is a nice kid. Just like Tyler Hansbrough is probably a nice kid. That doesn’t mean that I want to hear about how amazing they are for finishing college. Hansbrough at least turned down a real chance to make millions. Tebow will earn a paycheck in the NFL some day, but he’s not going in the first round and isn’t passing up a guaranteed payday. So please, stop telling me about how great he is.
Sports blogs were all over this story when it happened, realizing that the Church of Tebow will survive for yet another year.
Let me make on thing clear again. Tebow did not win the BCS title game for the Gators. He was good, especially in the second half, but he didn’t win them that game. That game was one by the Florida Gator defense and the playmaking of Percy Harvin.
If you had told me before the game that the Gators would score 24 points, I would have told you that they lost the game. So the fact that they held Oklahoma to just 14 points tells you that the Florida defensive players and coaches are the real heroes here.
And after trying to give the game away in the first half, Tebow rebounded to simply not make mistakes in the second half, and rely on Harvin to make big plays. That’s not what the world’s best college quarterback should be doing when the title is on the line.
Tebow showed once again why he’s not a real NFL prospect at quarterback, but why teams are interested in him as a fullback. He couldn’t throw the ball when he needed to (see two bad interceptions), but he could run into the pile for all night to grind out yards on the ground (see 22 carries). Actually, Tebow’s rushing numbers were identical to Chris Brown’s of Oklahoma, yet one of them is a hero and the other is forgotten (22 for 109, 0 TDs; 22 for 110, 0 TDs).
Tebow is a great inside runner, but he’s not the open field runner of a Vince Young or Michael Vick. And he throws the ball very averagely. He’s got a slow release and his long throws tend to float. He also hasn’t taken more than a handful of snaps from under center in his career. Tim Tebow will have a job in the NFL, but not as a franchise quarterback. For that reason, the only move he could make was to stay in school. Really, this was not a hard decision and this should not be the big news that people were making it.
So Tebow is returning to Florida, and if he can play defense next season at anywhere near the level he did against Oklahoma, they are the sure favorite to win their third BCS title in four years.
