Joe Buck to Get Show on HBO

lukekohler.com: Latest post

HBO wasted no time in filling in the gap left by the departure of Bob Costas, as the cable network inked Joe Buck to a deal that will have him doing four shows a year.

Costas left HBO for the MLB Network, killing Costas Now in the process. Buck will be doing some type of show that falls into that category, though is yet undefined. He will be doing a 90-minute show that may or may not be in front of a studio audience.

I just assume that Buck’s show will be about the disgusting acts that athletes commit during celebrations, or how to turn the most exciting Super Bowl play in our lives (at the time) into a routine reception.

Unfortunately, Buck will continue to handle his regular play-by-play duties for Fox in the meantime.

The only hope here is that with the help of HBO, Buck can be turned into a figure that is worth watching. Nobody produces sports better than HBO, including the Worldwide Leader.

I don’t really have anything against Buck, I actually think he’s rather funny when he’s off-the-cuff. But he’s terrible at calling games. Perhaps in a situation like the “town hall” style shows that Costas was known to moderate, Buck can be an entertaining personality.

Leave it to HBO to go get (like it or not) one of the biggest names in sports to replace Costas. Ross Greenburg and his crew at HBO really deserve more recognition for what they have done for sports journalism. From Real Sports to HBO Boxing to Hard Knocks to original documentaries, HBO Sports is the premier place for sports journalists to work.
