News and Links for February 9, 2009…
Vic Darchinyan had his way with Jorge Arce Saturday night, winning all but one round on all the scorecards before the doctor insisted that Arce had had enough after the 11th round. Darchinyan has cleaned out that weight class about as much as any modern weight class can be cleaned out. Nothing really left for Vic at 115, so look for him to move up to 118 later this year.
On the Showtime card Saturday, they announced that Jermain Taylor and Carl Froch will meet up on their network in April. That is great news for boxing fans. I don’t know exactly what happened to make this fight happen, since it was all but dead a week ago, but I’m thankful.
After a brief bidding war, HBO won the rights to show the May 2 mega-fight between Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao. That’s good news, since a fight of that magnitude needs the best calling it and the best production, both of which come from HBO. It will air on HBO Pay-Per-View.
Kobe, with help from Lamar Odom, beat Lebron.
Bob Costas and the MLB Network got some solid reviews for their first major challenge, as they handled the A-Rod-steroids story very well. I agree with the positive reviews.
The Pro Bowl happened, and it was as uninteresting as you’d imagine. Larry Fitzgerald did prove, once again, that he is the best receiver in football, bar none.
