In his first spring training game of the year, Alex Rodriguez homered and walked twice. Rodriguez was greeted with a mixture boos, cheers and heckles, but was welcomed with a standing ovation after a two-run homer in the fourth.
It was Rodriguez’s first game since admitting to using performance enhancing drugs during his years in Texas. Rodriguez has had a hard time getting accepted by Yankee fans since arriving there, often being the receiver of unwarranted boos in the past. With the steroid issue being the lead story in New York this month, many are wondering just how Yankee fans will receive him when the season starts.
If today is any indication, people will always welcome the great baseball player, as long as he is contributing on the field. It’s the same reason that Barry Bonds was treated like a hero in San Francisco, despite getting booed in every other ballpark in the majors. I suspect it will be the same for A-Rod.
Rodriguez finished the game 1-for-1 with a homer and two walks, and left after the fifth inning.
ADDED: Quickly hopping from right-foot onto wrong-foot, A-Rod left the facility after the game by hopping into an SUV driven by his juice-injecting cousin. Genius.
