With no room at the halfway-house, Michael Vick is going to get to go home to serve out the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, clearing the way for a potential return to the NFL.
While the Falcons have made it clear that Vick will not be back in Atlanta, they are looking to trade him somewhere that may be more welcoming. Teams, however, are afraid of the deadly combination of Vick’s contract and the impending protests that are likely to also have an economic impact in whatever city Vick lands in.
Vick was supposed to enter a halfway-house any day now, but because of a lack of space, Vick will instead get to go to his own home, but it won’t be for another three months.
As per the Atlanta-Journal Constitution:
Vick’s lawyers have said they expected him to be moved any day into a halfway house in Newport News. But because of a lack of space, Vick will be released instead to his Hampton home at some point on or after May 21, said the official, who has knowledge of the case but requested anonymity because the individual was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
For the first two months of his release, he’ll be monitored electronically and only be able to leave the home for activities approved by his probation office. He will be eligible for release in July, allowing him to pursue the continuation of his football career. That is, of course, if someone will have him.
The Atlanta Falcons still hold the rights to Vick and have been shopping trade offers around the league, but as of yet, have no buyers. Perhaps teams are waiting until after the draft and free agency to determine their true needs, meaning Vick’s value could rise significantly at the beginning of May when mini-camps begin.
At the end of the day, the guy can probably still help a lot of teams win football games, and as Barry Bonds proved, Alex Rodriguez will soon prove, and a slew of scumbag sports stars have proved over the years — if you can play the game, fans will put up with whatever baggage you come with. Vick will have a job somewhere, contingent upon his ability to still be faster than everyone else on the field.
Most likely landing spots, and odds of Vick ending up there:
The Cowboys, Bengals and Raiders are perfect landing spots, due to their high tolerance of criminals and scumbags. But, the Cowboys are too heavily invested in Tony Romo to aggressively pursue Vick, and the Raiders are equally invested in JaMarcus Russell. Russell, however, hasn’t shown he can be a good NFL QB, and Al Davis could cut that cord at any moment and no one would be surprised.
Of those, the Bengals are the logical choice. Team full of criminals? Check. Quarterback issues? Check. Fan base that will show up to all eight home games no matter who is playing QB? Check. Sure, Carson Palmer could get healthy and be good again, but he might not. Adding Vick might qualify them for some type of group probation officer plan — and any owner has to like that. Doesn’t “Siete finds Ocho Cinco in the back of the end zone!” have a ring to it?
The Eagles are a decent fit because McNabb is clearly on his way out of that town, and the city itself really loves it’s scumbags. Plus, they have a jail right in the stadium, a nice safety net to have when trading for a guy who’s not yet been paroled.
Minnesota is a good fit if only for the fact that they’ve been searching for their next black quarterback so hard that they gave Tavaris Jackson the starting job. They’re still having trouble getting past the Randall Cunningham and Daunte Culpepper, and Vick could be the answer to their troubles.
No word yet on who the new steady-quarterback will be for the Leavenworth football squad.
