The Cleveland Browns said goodbye Kellen Winslow, after several years of injuries, controversy and a little bit of solid football.
Cleveland traded the 25-year old tight end to Tampa Bay in exchange for some undisclosed draft picks.
Winslow’s career in Cleveland was disappointing, to say the least. After breaking his leg and missing the majority of his rookie campaign, Winlsow crashed his motorcycle, leading to further injuries. Last year, he contracted a staph infection and missed even more games.
Of course, being the soldier that he is, he fights on.
Quick personal story.
A few years back, I was working my day job at the time as a beat reporter covering the Arizona Cardinals when I was interviewing some of the new draft picks from that year.
I was talking to Alex Stepanovich, a rookie center out of Ohio State when his personal Kellen Winslow story came up.
Stepanovich told the story of being at the combine when he and some other players were in the elevator. Winslow got on the elevator and the players were all introducing themselves to one another. When Stepanovich identified himself as being out of Ohio State, Winslow replied with (paraphrasing), “man, Ohio State ain’t have shit… who do you think you are?”
To which Stepanovich replied: “I’m just a soldier, dude.”
At that point, as the story goes, Winlsow’s face turned to stone and he quickly exited the elevator the next time the doors opened. At that point, the entire elevator busted out laughing and Stepanovich was a combine hero.
That, my friends, is a good football story.
