According to his most recent blog posting, Chris Cooley says that Jason Taylor hates money, and passed on $500,000 just to work out with the team in the offseason.
Not only did JT pass up the money for the workouts, but that led to him getting cut, costing him an additional $9 million.
By Cooley’s math, Taylor was passing on nearly $13,000 a day by not participating in the offseason workouts.
Wow.
“$500,000 to work out between the months of March and June – just to work out. Then an upcoming salary of $9,000,000 – for one season of play. One season! You would really have to hate to be somewhere to turn down ten million dollars for the next ten months of work. I mean, I know Miami is pretty nice, but just go ahead and make that much money while you still can and then retire anywhere you want. Hell, I would go play in Russia for 10,000,000. I would pack my bags and fly out tomorrow, “Ill see ya in February.”
Jason allegedly turned down the $500,000 offer to work out with the Redskins for the off season. When the request was denied the Skins released his rights for the last season of his contract. This was obviously no surprise to JT, who wanted to stay with his family, where they live in Miami.”
Taylor wouldn’t agree to taking part in 75 percent of the Redskins offseason workouts, claiming instead that he wanted to spend the time with his family.
A year ago, Taylor chose to compete on Dancing with the Stars rather than do his offseason workouts, so when he got back home and got traded, he spent the entire season away from his family.
Maybe it’s me, but when you’re being asked to work out three times a week for eight of the 13 weeks in the offseason, I think you can make time for it.
How about any of the following:
When he’s on the field, he’s a great football player, but you just can’t cut it in the NFL as a part time player. Every team will turn on you eventually. He’ll get signed somewhere, but don’t be surprised when he gets cut, retires early, or is injured in the next year. At 34, I give him one more decent year, then he’s off to Tiki-land.
