Alex Rodriguez has a torn labrum and a cyst on his hip and it may require surgery that will keep him out for 10 weeks to four months. Rather than get the surgery, the Yankees, A-Rod and their medical staff are opting for therapy that will keep him on the field in the meantime.
The only thing that is certain is that Rodriguez won’t be playing baseball anytime soon.
The difference in the timetable if he does have surgery comes down to whether or not the torn labrum is the only thing wrong with his hip, or if it is just a symptom of a bigger problem.
According to the New York Times:
If the operation fixes only the torn labrum, the recovery period could be four to six weeks, they said. But if there is surgery to correct an underlying cause in the bones, recovery could take four months.
According to Yankees GM Brian Cashman, the cyst on his right hip is a large one, so the hope is that draining it could relieve some of the pain and stiffness that he is suffering from.
Coupled with recuperative therapy, the hope is that Rodriguez could play through the injury and deal with it in the next offseason if need be.
A-Rod was removed from the Dominican Republic’s World Baseball Classic team and will be limited in spring training until a final decision has been made.
