Tomlinson to Stay in San Diego; Everyone Wins

lukekohler.com: Latest post

LaDainian Tomlinson and the San Diego Chargers have come together and restructured the final three years of his contract, allowing the star running back to remain with the team while freeing up salary cap space in the future.

Apparently, from what we know of the restructured deal, everyone wins on this one.

In addition to not taking a pay cut in 2009, Tomlinson receives an unspecified guaranteed amount of money in 2010, the source said. The amount might not be large enough to guarantee Tomlinson can’t be cut next year, but it gives him some security for the 2010 season.

A trade off, Tomlinson reduced his salaries in 2010 and 2011. He was scheduled to make $8 million next year and $9.275 million in 2011. The final three years of his old contract was worth $24 million over three years.

The extra cap space that the Chargers will have because of this will also allow them to try to sign Darren Sproles to a long-term deal. They currently have him under contract with the non-exclusive franchise tag, allowing him to make $6.62 million if they can’t reach a long term deal.

Tomlinson, who will be 30 in June, is coming off of the worst year of his career, rushing for just 1110 yards at 3.8 per carry, and for the second straight year, his season ended with an injury.
